Risks of online file sharing

Online file sharing is a very common practice nowadays in our society. It allows us to rapidly share information between individuals and download movies, articles or any other types of files that are of our own interest. However, when we share information online we have to bear in mind the potential risks that concern us:

        I.            Information leaks

It has become a more frequent practice in the last years. More and more, hackers try to get and release information from the big companies databases or passwords, date of birth or relevant information of individuals. This are illicit acts with no big consequences, the problem comes when it is related with national security; such is the case of the helicopter Marine One when its blueprints were available to everybody through a breach in the security.

      II.            Virus

Viruses are a big problem for individuals. Usually the files contain not very aggressive but dangerous virus such as Trojan.

    III.            Spyware

Type of malicious software installed without the knowledge of the user that collects information such as key passwords or other confidential information.

Measures to prevent this behavior

As a preventive action, it is firstly needed the installation of a good anti-virus and spyware programme. Secondly, it is necessary to be cautious whenever you share information online, try to use the same server every time or do not click on the spam messages for trading information.

A more general measure would be taken by each government with its current legislation. For example, in the United States users have to accept and give their consent before starting any share. In Spain, the government was trying to control more in detail, although it was never applied.
