A web browser is a software application that
grants access to the World Wide Web, commonly known as the Internet, enabling
the users to display and manipulate web pages where different types of
information are stored. Web browsers allow users to retrieve all these
information from the Internet.
The most
visualized documents are text documents although they’re usually combined with
multimedia applications. To obtain the code, browsers communicate with web
servers, using the HTTP protocol, and download HTML documents.
Apart from HTML documents browsers also
recognize XML documents and allows the user to visualize them, although before
the display the document is transformed to HTML using what is called XSL.
When using browsers there's a methodic
process, that consists on an interaction between browser and server. This
process follows the same steps everytime:
- The user makes a request, and asks the
browser for an specific document.
-The user, unconsciously, sends the server some information, such as: its HTTP
version or the browser he's using.
- The server sends an HTTP transaction. This
transaction includes: if the user's request has been processed, the
identification of the server, the content of the document and its length.

The first web browser was created in 1990 by
Tim Berners-Lee, and was named WorldWideWeb. It was presented in public one
year after. Since then, web browsers have been improved and optimized, offering
more features and functionalities related to the developing of the Web itself.
